Horse racing

The home of horse racing in the UK, Newmarket is less than an hour's drive from White Lodge Farm Cottages.

The flat racing season at Newmarket runs from April to November, with racing in June, July and August on the July Course and for the remainder of the year on the Rowley Mile.

A particular feature of the racing at the former are the evening meetings, many with live entertainment following the evening's racing.

But also within an hour's drive are the intimate National Hunt course at Fakenham and the flat racing course at Great Yarmouth, the latter also having a number of evening meetings in the Summer and often running special attractions to encourage junior racegoers (children under 16 accompanied by an adult gain free admission to all fixtures and there's an adventure playground). Our tip would be that paying the extra few pounds to have access to the additional facilities of the Paddock Enclosure will enhance the experience.

Those with a particular interest in horses and horse racing looking for a real treat on a visit to Newmarket might book on one of the visitors' tours, taking in a visit to the gallops, the horses' swimming pool, a training yard and the town. If time is short then you might just visit the National Horse Racing Museum in the middle of the town. If your journey to White Lodge Farm passes Newmarket this might be something to take in on the way.

Picture of Fakenham Point to Point For "back to basics" horse racing, how about an afternoon's point-to pointing? The season runs from January to April in East Anglia (so wrap up warm, taking something suitable to sustain your inner warmth and don some waterproof footwear). The courses at Fakenham, Ampton, Cottenham, Marks Tey and Higham are all within reach of the cottages.

"We had an excellent day's racing at Great Yarmouth racecourse, with a couple of winners too, which always helps."     B,R,A&S
